What Causes Persistent Smelling Of Chlorine?

Hi. The past couple of days I have had a strong chlorine smell all the time. I haven't been swimming and apparently I don't smell but I can constantly smell it. In April last year I lost some of my sense of smell and taste, I am aware of smells but I couldn't always say what it was. I can't smell gas though. I am wondering if this chlorine smell is something I should be worried about? I am a 29 year old female who is vegetarian.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain persistent smell of ammonia in nose along with a history of loss of sense of smell and taste can be due to causes like Phantosmia or Olfactory Hallucination and it can occur due to conditions like sinus infection, nasal polyps, migraines, problems associated with central nervous system like stroke, epilepsy etc..
Other causes can be Kidney or Liver diseases..

I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like nasal endoscopy and MRI scan can help in diagnosis and treatment can be planned accordingly..

As of now you can do saline nasal irrigations, decongestant nasal sprays, steroid nasal sprays..
You can be advised medications like sedatives, anti-depressants and anti epileptic dugs depending upon the cause..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
