What Causes Persistent Stomach Pain In Children?

my 3yr old son just started complaining about his stomach hurting. he looks well. he asked for medicine. he was whimpering and half crying. i asked him to lay down on the couch and i examined his abdomen. asked him some questions. he says the pain was all the time and is in one place, not all over. He was indicating to his belly button and lower right of the belly button. i told him it was probably time to try to use the bathroom and had him try to poop. he tried and said he needed help. then we went and sat on the couch to look up some symptoms. he doesn t have a fever. he wasn t sweating. i kept asking him some questions and then he said I m ok Mommy and fell asleep. but he do east take naps anymore. i laid him down on my bed and and felt his stomach again. it doesn t stir him or make him wince. he is sweating a little, but he sweats in his sleep. i called our pediatrician and i a, waiting for her to get back to me. what should i do next??????

Hello,

Please relax and don't panic. All the conditions that may cause pain abdomen at that age are treatable completely, so please don't worry. A few conditions that cause pain abdomen in toddlers are air swallowing, amoebic dysentery, colic, constipation, food allergy or intolerance, heartburn or acid reflux, ingesting grass or plants, stomach flu or food poisoning, strep throat or mononucleosis, pain caused by anxiety or depression and intestinal worm infestations.

As you have already called the specialist, just wait for the instructions. As baby slept, it means the pain is not severe and it is relieved. Most of the time, the pain is self limiting. You can give Colicaid syrup 3 ml to relieve from colic. It would be better to take the kid to a pediatrician and get him examined clinically and then take the medicine.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
