Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Persistent Swelling And Rigidity Of Finger Tip Post Cat Bite?
On April 10th of this year I was bitten n scratched by a feral cat. I went to my GP who gave me a tetanus shot and a script for 20 Amox Clay 875mg to b taken 1 every 12 hours. I left the next day for a 10 days. I realized I had forgotten the antibiotic. I called my physician, asked him to call another script to a New York drugstore and continued to take the medicine. I caught the cat when I returned and it was fine with none of the obvious rabies markers. it is now almost May 20 and the single most troubling side of the injury is that aside from it still being swollen and itchy, I cannot voluntarily straighten the tip of my finger. It hurts almost all of the time.
Please do not worry about the symptoms as they might linger around for few days or weeks. I would advise you to take some antihistamines (local and oral) for a few days to get rid of the swelling and itching. You can use tab pheniramine maleate or tab Cetirizine which are available over the counter. You can use topical steroids like Hydrocortisone or Betnovate to get rid of the symptoms. Gradually they will disappear in another few days or weeks.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Anoop Kumar, General & Family Physician
