My knee is swollen. It got worst last Tuesday when I stand up from sitting and my left knee just give. I could not put my left foot on floor. I tried even thou excruciating. Back to office strapped it with my scarf tightly. Was sent home struggled on way home until now it s still swollen. Rub pain ointments took neurofen for pain relief - can t walk to hospital or doctors surgery - elevated my legs last night after pain killer pill. The shooting pain is at back side of knee cap and the knee cap itself. The pain is now up my waist Thank you for your help.

From the history it does not appear that you had any injury or trauma to your left knee. If it is swollen and painful as you mentioned , then the cause is a non traumatic one. It could be due to joint infection or it could be non infective cause. The possibility of Gout in your left knee could be the one apparent from the history .
you have to take pain killers . If ibuprofen then take every 6-8 hours (after meals). strap it with some bandage and keep it elevated on pillow etc .
If with all these measures do not feel comfortable then try to visit nearby medical professional for complete assessment .
