What Causes Persistent Swelling In Left Shoulder Joint After Injury?

My mother had an accident 10 years back with injury to left shoulder joint. Now after many years her left shoulder seem swollen as compared to the right shoulder joint. I have checked for lymphadenopathy but there is none. What could be the likely cause and how should it be investigated?

Hello,

Your mom is suffering from persistent swelling in the left shoulder. She has a history of having injured her left shoulder in an accident 10 years back. Her symptoms may be indicative of post traumatic bursitis or chronic bursitis. When there is too much friction, the bursa become irritated and inflamed leading to bursitis.

Other medical conditions that can cause similar symptoms are rheumatoid arthritis, shoulder arthritis, aging, frozen shoulder, ligament or tendon strain, etc. You are suggested to get your mother clinically examined by an orthopedist, get the required blood tests (CBC), urinalysis, Imaging tests done to detect the pathology causing the symptoms.

The treatment depends on the cause or pathology causing the symptoms. The treatment is commonly done with analgesics, physical therapy, immobilization - sling / splint, medications for rheumatoid pain, icing, injections, aspiration of the bursa, antibiotics, anti- inflammatory medications, re-positioning and surgery if needed.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
