What Causes Persistent Swelling In The Tonsils Despite Taking Medication?
Hi, I had throats pain 3 months ago and was treated with amoxycillian and it got better. In the last few weeks I have had throat discomfort and at least one swollen tonsil. I was diagnosed with early signs of strep (without a strep test) and was prescribed prednisone and a zpack. I am almost done with the medication and the tonsil is still swollen and symptoms have not changed. Is the cancer? What could this be?
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of persistent swelling in the tonsils despite taking medication. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like sore throat (viral or bacterial), post nasal drip, sinusitis, granular pharyngitis and acid reflux. Sometimes infection is due to viral infection in case antibacterial medicine is not going to help . I would suggest you to do warm saline gargles several times a day , keep your head elevated while sleeping. Consult ENT specialist for proper examination . Doctor may order test like swab test , viral culture test , CT scan and physical examination with laryngoscope. Doctor may prescribe antibacterial or antiviral depending upon the diagnosis along with decongestants , diphenhydramine and expectorants. You should avoid eating spicy and heavy food , reduce intake of dairy products .
Hope your concern has been resolved.
