What Causes Persistent Tenderness In Right Knee And Groin After Right Foot Injury?

A patient complains of persistent tenderness in the right knee and groin area. The tenderness started a few weeks after he injured the big toe of his right foot, which became red, swollen, warm, and painful. He says the toe improved without medical attention. The knee and groin tenderness remain. What could the physician identify as the cause of the patient’s knee and groin pain? What is a possible treatment?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi.

If one end of a limb suffers an external injury and another joint in the same limb seems to present with symptoms of pain or with difficulty in movement, always an impact injury should be suspected. This means that the impact of the injury to the toe could have caused injury to the knee and hip joint causing the presentation the patient is now suspecting. An xray should first be conducted and if nothing is found only then an MRI should be order. Treatment will depend on the diagnosis.

Best wishes.
