What Causes Persistent Vertigo While On Meclizine And Diazepam?

Vertigo problem, very severe, suddenly within past 10 months, causing cold sweats, vomiting, and uncontrollable room spinning for at least 7 hours per episode? MRI revealed nothing suspicious. Days Prior to vertigo episodes I feel fullness in right ear, sometimes a roaring sound and a bit of unsteadiness . I have meclizine and diazepam but they do not stop the episode , just sleep. Any ideas?

Hi,

I cannot say in your particular case, but generally, those medicines are used for vertigo. They are nowhere near 100% effective, more like 50/50. However, they do NOT cure it. If a medicine for a symptom doesn't work then it should be stopped. An evaluation with an MRI of the head is done for serious vertigo, but mostly it is an irritation of the nerve or bone structures in the ear and not much can be done to fix it. On the other hand, physical therapy can be very useful for getting used to it and functioning with it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
