Hi, My 9 year old daughter has been throwing up. It s going on 5 days. She has not had diarrhea and has not had a temp. Her Doctor says it s a stomach virus but everything I read says a virus comes with diarrhea. They have ruled out appendicitis. Do you think it could just be a simple virus? Thank you. A worried Mom.
It is normal for children to vomit occasionally. In most cases, it will last no longer than one or two days. But, if it persists more than two days, then the underlying causes should be found out and treat them accordingly. The most common cause of vomiting in children is gastroenteritis. This is the infection of the gut usually caused by virus or bacteria, that may also cause diarrhea which generally lasts for few days. The most important thing during this period is make sure they keep drinking fluids and oral rehydration solution to prevent dehydration. Other possible causes of vomiting in children are food allergies, acid reflux, middle ear infections, pneumonia, meningitis, accidentally swallowing something poisonous etc. Antiemetics and oral rehydration solution are the treatment of choice and eliminating the exact cause of vomiting here.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
