What Causes Persistent Weakness In The Arms After Spinal Stenosis Surgery?

Had spinal stenosis surgery to relieve compression of nerve at C5-6. Surgery successful, but still have the inability to move arms above waist (deltoids) and hand grip is weak. Both bilateral. Also had 2 surgeries for Duputren Contracture, one of which has returned. Post operative MRI indicated the spine is no longer compressed, but muscle weakness still present. Therapy did not provide much improvement.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Sorry to hear about your problem. Nerve compression can cause damage to the nerves of that is prolonged. This may lead to weakness in the concerned muscles. Many times after the cause is removed, the weakness improves but it's not alway the rule. Sometimes the weakness persist even after the nerves are released. Improvements may occur very gradually so you should continue physiotherapy as it's the only thing that may offer some regain of the powers.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman, General & Family Physician
