What Causes Pins And Needles In Anal Canal Closer To Rectum?

I am 20 years old, I got costipated a month and a half ago. After that, it was very painful to pass stool. So I called for nurse advice at my university clinic, and was told that most likely I had hemorrhoids. I bought over the counter medication such as preparation H and tuck's. I thought it would help alleviate the pain and discomfort when passing stool, but it did not help too much. These past few days, I've been having pain as if I had pins and needles in my anal canal closer to my rectum. Today was the worst pain I've experienced. I thought of going to the E.R but knew the wait would be long. What is wrong with me?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Constipation is followed by development of a condition called a fissure in ano in which there is formation of a cut at the anal verge and since the area is very sensitive it causes a lot of pain on passing stool.

Passing stool dilates the anal verge as a normal process thus causing recurrence of pain and ulcer formation.

Infection therein causes peri-anal itching and also changes in skin due to dermatitis, local sweat collection, inability to clean the area properly due to pain.

I would advise you the following in such a situation:
- Sitz bath in a tub with warm water
- Take laxatives and stool softeners

Send the stool and blood for investigations and if there is any evidence of infection get a prescription from your Doctor. If the problem persists, then you may need a surgery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant
