Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I ve had extreme putting edema in my legs--ankle to thigh---for some time. Been on lasix over a month and was hospitalized for higher doses with no results. If anything it gets worse every day. They found mild left ventricular hypotrophy in my echo. How can I get rid of the 20-30 lbs of water if lasix is not helping?
There are multiple causes of edema of ankles and legs- -Venous insufficiency like Varicose veins -Lymphaedema -Deep veinous thrombosis -Idiopathic (Unknown cause) -Cardiogenic (Due to heart failure) -Renal (Kidney injury)
If the edema is not responding to Lasix, then I would recommend adding another diuretic like A Spironolactone, after consulting with your doctor.
Also I would recommend us of stockings in day and leg elevation at night in case of Varicose veins. A doppler study of veins of legs might be needed to rule out Deep vein thrombosis.
Hope this answers your question, Thank you.
