What Causes Poking Sensation On The Tongue Post Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

Hi. I just had my wisdom teeth removed yesterday and everything went well. I have some stitches on the bottom gum area where my wisdom teeth used to be. The problem is the tip of the stitch is constantly poking my tongue and causing me a lot of pain. I can't eat and I am starting to get throat pain when I swallow anything. Please tell me if the stitch problem is normal, and if the throat is normal. Thank you.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that the tip of the stitch or the stitch knot is coming in contact with your tongue and as it touches your tongue it leads to slight movement of the stitch as well as the mucosa that is tied with it..
As the tissues in the area are still inflamed because it is just one day when you have got the extraction done, therefore it is causing pain and discomfort..
Pain in the area of extraction as well as throat after wisdom tooth extraction is not an abnormal finding and will resolve gradually as the healing will progress..
As of now I would suggest you to apply a numbing gel containing Lignocaine over the area..
You should also take anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen.
Start gargling with warm saline solution if you have completed 24 hours of the extraction..
Do cool compresses over the cheek..
Take a soft diet with more of fluids..
Gargle with antiseptic mouthwash gargles..
In case if still it worsen consult your dentist and get evaluated...

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
