What Causes Poor Weight Gain In An Infant?

Hello, My 11 months daughter is only 9.400 kg. She is not gaining weight and so skinny. She is supossed to be 11 kg by her 12 months. The smell of her poop is bad. She is an active baby, moves a lot but she was eating well just a week ago. Now she refuses food and it seems she is teething.

Hello,

It's very common for babies to not accept feeds while teething. Some other causes may be when a new formula or food is introduced, baby may be allergic to it or during any infections like cold, cough, or fever. The factors you have to consider to know if a baby is sick or healthy are baby's activity, sleeping duration, eating pattern, no symptoms like vomiting, loose stools, fever, cold, or cough and, no excessive crying.

As you have mentioned, teething might be the only cause for your baby to not accept feeds. If the same persists even after 1 week, you can take her to a pediatrician. Smell of the poop may vary depending upon the food taken by baby. Only if she is passing many loose stools in a day, it is to be considered abnormal.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
