What Causes Popping Noise Under Belly Button While Having Umbilical Hernia?
my husband has an umbilical hernia and he also has gallstones. I don t know if that has anything to do with my question but earlier today he was passing gas and he heard and felt a loud popping noise under his belly button area. what was that? now he says it hurts every time he breathes in. thanks. hope your not a bunch of quacks.
Hello and welcome to HCM, Intestinal loops can enter the umbilical hernia and bowel sounds can be heard in the bowel loops which have entered the hernia. Thus, the popping sounds that you are hearing can be the bowel sounds. Normal bowel sounds can also be heard normally also in the absence of any hernia. Pain felt while breathing can also be related to hernia. I suggest you to consult your surgeon for ultrasound abdomen. The ultrasound abdomen will determine the status of umbilical hernia and the contents which have entered the hernia. If the bowel loops have entered the hernia, that will also show up on ultrasound and thus management can be planned. Management is essentially surgical which involves reducing the intestinal loops back into abdomen and repairing the defect.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
