What Causes Popping Of Ear And Dizziness While Blowing Nose?
My husband just blew his nose and he heard / felt a loud pop in his ear. He then became so dizzy that he could not stand. His eyes were moving back and forth uncontrollably. He was recently diagnosed with pneumonia and is on doxycycline..(4th day). He is still coughing a lot. It was quite frightening to see his eyes darting back and forth. It seems to have resolved. Should we be worried? Thanks!

General & Family Physician, Dr. Priyanka's Response
Hi,
The popping of the ear and dizziness experienced by your husband after blowing his nose could be due to a sudden change in pressure in the middle ear. This can occur when there is inflammation or blockage in the Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat.
The coughing associated with his pneumonia and the use of doxycycline could also contribute to this. If the symptoms resolve, there may not be immediate cause for concern. However, if the symptoms persist or worsen, it would be best to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation and appropriate treatment.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
