What Causes Popping Sound In Ears?

Hi, So a couple of months ago I had a cold and my ears were clogged. They aren t clogged anymore but ever since I ve had kind of a weird sensation in my left ear-nothing bad, just odd. I ve been to a an ENT and he said my ears look fine. However, when I try to pop my ears the right one makes a hard, loud pop, but the left one kind of sounds like there s air in it and it doesn t make that loud pop sound, it just kind of feels like something stretches out and then goes back in. Any ideas what this could be? Thanks!

Hello,

I can understand your concern. As the ENT surgeon ruled out any problems in the ear, I assume that you are suffering from Temporomandibular joint problem, the joint near ear that helps in opening and closing jaws along with side to side movements.

Any problem with this joint is usually felt in the ear. As you are feeling something stretching out, the joint might be subluxated. The popping and clicking sounds are also associated with it.

Thus, I would advise you to visit an oral surgeon for the examination of the joint and x-ray to examine the bony structures underneath. Usually, the joint is not treated for minor deformities which are not causing pain and discomfort. However, if discomfort increases, you might need treatment. The surgeon may also train you for some exercises that can improve the function of the joint. Heat compressions can help too.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic,. Take care.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
