What Causes Presence Of Staphylococcus Aureus In Urethral Swab Despite Treatment?

I went for urethral swab culture and sensitivity test which yielded scanty growth of Staphylococcus aureus which was found to be sensitive to cefatriazone and ciprotab. Complete dosage of these drugs were taken and a repeat test of urethral swab culture test was made. I observed that the scanty growth still appears. What do I do?

Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern.

1. As your age cannot be deduced by the case history alone thus following is my opinion:

i. subclinical or asymptomatic bacteriuria is common in certain age groups and has different concept/meaning.
ii. It will be better to consult a Urologist or for second opinion since for better understanding-management-prognosis, it is compulsory to know the possible site of infection [urethral], whether the infection is uncomplicated or complicated, is it re-infection/relapse, or treatment failure and its pathogenesis and risk factors.
iii. S.aureus is the commonest and most important gram positive hospital acquired organism and is cause of UTI among patients with urinary tract catheterization and relatively an uncommon cause of UTI is general population.

PS. It could be possible prostatitis [if you are male] and treatment will vary anywhere between 6-12 months and your Urologist might ask for Urinary tract imaging like: ultrasonography, CT,IVU, voiding cystourethrography, retrograde urethrography, or cystoscopy.
