Hi, I m a 65-year old male paraplegic (T3-T4 burst fracture). I straight cath to empty my bladder. Most often I remove my catheter to find white material floating in the tip. Material is also present a the beginning of the flow suggesting it accumulates near the bottom of the bladder.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
Repeated catheterization can irritate urethra to create excess mucus secretion. Please consult your doctor and ask about irrigating the catheter with sterile water / use of lubrication before catheterization. Catheterization runs risk of infection...the white matter you find might be due to fungal infection (it would be associated with itching) or bacterial infection. You may need specific medicines in such case with consultation of your treating doctor.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
