What Causes Pressure Headaches?

Hi, I am Scott. I have been having almost like pressure head aches for 6 months. I have had all the testing done MRI , EMG and have dealt with a neurologist. I also have been getting a lidocaine hcl steroid mix about every 3-4 weeks. Nothing seems to be showing up and nobody knows what is going on. The pain generally is in the back of my head and get shooting pain at times down both sides of my neck. I have similar problems with both my arms. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

Hello Scott!

Welcome on HCM!

I read carefully your question and understand your concern.

Your symptoms could be related to occipital neuralgia and cervical column degeneration.

Have your performed any examinations on your cervical column?

I would recommend performing a cervical column X ray study to exclude possible chronic degeneration. A cervical spine MRI study may be needed if a herniated disc is suspected.

I would also recommend starting therapy with carbamazepine or lamotrigine as a preventive therapy for your headache. Antiepilptic drugs are known to reduce the frequency or occipital neuralgia.

You should discuss with your doctor on the above issues.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Aida
