What Causes Presumed Anxiety, Fluttering In Chest And Shivering?
19 year old female otherwise healthy, having problems with presumed anxiety and unable to relax. She has had a recent history of panic like attacks during her university exam schedule. Currently she is unable to relax, feels fluttering or tightness in the chest. Despite breathing exercises no real or prolonged relief. Latest symptom today is on and off shivering. Vitals (pulse, BP) were normal with home BP machine. Thank-you for your review Todd (Dad) I am also a hospital pharmacist
The symptoms you describe are typical of anxiety including the shivering sensation. She might benefit from oral medication from anxiety like SSRI medications, Citalopram and paroxetine are examples of these medications. Generally they are quite effective in treating anxiety and she might need to use them for months to have a long standing effect. These medications generally are well tolerated and do not cause dependence.
She may also benefit from counseling sessions that when combined with medications are highly effective.
Having TSH and FT4 tests to rule out thyroid problems before treating her might be advised to make sure that the thyroid is not precipitating the situation as it might do so if it is not functioning well.
I hope I have answered to your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards, Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
