What Causes Profuse Saliva Production During Bacterial Pharyngitis?
Husband has bacterial pharyngitis with greatly increased saliva production, such that he cannot lie down to sleep. has today been prescribed amoxicillin, first 3 tablets today. Saliva production has got more profuse. Is this result of antibiotics clicking in? What should he expect over next 24-48 hours?
I have gone through your query and understand your concerns..
As per your complain excessive salivation can be felt due to two common reasons while having throat infection:
1.Due to irritation in throat it becomes difficult to swallow the saliva and due to reduced swallowing there is a feeling of increased salivation.
2.Due to infection causing irritation and inflammation there is stimulation of the salivary glands leading to increased salivation..
Increased salivation does not seems to be caused due to amoxicillin and it is due to throat irritation only.. Nothing to worry, continue taking the medication given to you like Amoxicillin and in case if you are not described any painkillers you can take painkillers. Do warm saline gargles, steam inhalations and chew vitamin C pellet daily.. You can gargle with Chlorohexidine containing mouthwash as it has a drying effect in mouth and will relieve excessive salivation..
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards.. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora.
