What Causes Prolonged Irregularity In Periods?

Hi I m 22 year old and since I got my first period ten years ago, it s never been regular. The most times I ve gotten it in a year is about five times, the least being three times. This year alone I ve gotten it once and it was back in March. I haven t been to a gynecologist yet and I m now pretty anxious. What could be the problem and is this long-term irregularity normal?

Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care question. Having irregular cycles is common and the most common reason is polycystic ovarian disease. This is caused by the ovaries never producing a full egg and not having the correct hormones to regulate your cycle because of the failed egg. I would recommend that you be seen by a gynecologist who can run the proper test to determine the actual cause of your cycle problem
