What Causes Prolonged Menstrual Bleeding With History Of Uterine Fibroids?

My period started 17 days ago and is showing no signs of stopping. I am 46 years old. My periods usually last about 5 days and are light. I have had uterine fibroids for a couple of years but I have never had a period last indefinitely like this. Should I be concerned?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI,
Thanks for the query. I understand your concern.
- Fibroid uterus is known to cause irregular & profuse bleeding
- As you are 46 it can be FUH because of hormonal imbalance.
- Pre menopausal symptoms can lead to hormonal imbalance & profuse bleeding.& it becomes essential at this stage of life to take a note of the symptom & get it investigated & treated.
What you need at the moment is to consult a gynecologist .. get treatment for controlling the bleeding ( usually oral contraceptive pills are given in a higher dose to control it along with haemostatic drugs ( those which control bleeding )like Mefanamic acid/ CVP gynae.
If not controlled with this ,, D& C procedure helps to stop & diagnose the cause of bleeding.
USG of pelvis helps in confirmation of diagnosis & this is then followed by specific treatment ( cyclical hormonal treatment/ raising general condition of patient with iron, protein supplement/ Removal of fibroid/ endometrial ablation/ hysterectomy.. as per need.)
Thanks.
