What Causes Prolonged Menstruation After Insertion Of Mirena IUD?
Hi. I ve been having menstrual/vaginal bleeding for the last 2 weeks straight. I got a mirena IUD put in, in February of this year which I am pretty sure is the cause since prior to insertion my periods were always regular. I am aware that this form of birth control is associated with irregular periods. However, this is the first time I ve had a period for this long since getting it almost 6 months ago. Is there any reason for alarm? Should I go see my doctor or just wait it out? Thanks!
Hello, I have gone through the query and understood your concern. It is true that the insertion of the IUD, infact, any hormone contraception, can lead to menstrual irregularities. However, the disturbances should be tolerable and subside in a couple of months. In the current scenario, you have to report the matter to your health care provider and get help. If there is no respite with medical management, the IUD may have to be removed and other possible alternative mode of contraception given. Hope this helps.
