What Causes Prolonged Menstruation, Extreme Fatigue And Mental Fogginess?

Hi! I just read the post below. Based on that conversation I will divulge the following: 45, terrible interruption of menstrual cycle, 5-6 weeks bleeding along with extreme fatigue and mental fogginess. Unlike the person on here, I am extremely Active and overweight at the same time. I play roller derby and soccer. I use a menstrual cup so I can definitely see that there is a ton of blood everyday. Approx 1/4 to 1/2 cup day. My true questions are 1) is it possible to bleed to death? If not, why should I take estrogen orally? If not, should I take progesterone orally? I hVe been taking progesterone as a creme and am wondering if I should continue. It did stop the bleeding for a few weeks. If the topical progesterone is the way to go, do you have vaginal progesterone recommendations?

Hi,

The heavy bleeding during menstruation can lead to sever anemia and cause symptoms of anemia including weakness, fatigue, lack of energy and concentration etc. Its very rare for a person to bleed to death due to heavy menstruation however anemia is very commonly seen in women. I would advise you to consult a gynecologist and start medications in the form of pills in order find out the cause, if any and also to control the heavy bleeding.

It might be a combination pill which you would be prescribed by the gynecologist. Estrogen alone is not advised due the increase in risk of endometrial cancer. Progesterone cream is used for post menopausal symptoms than controlling bleeding during menses. In addition to it, I would advise you to take iron supplements and also eat healthy food rich in iron to gain the lost blood.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
