General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
Nexplanon being along with acting contraceptive... tends to cause irregular/long or short/scanty or profuse periods. All of this is due to the prevention of ovulation & hormonal imbalance thus result in menstrual problems.
Mostly normal periods resume in 1 to 3 months after the removal of the implant. The profuse bleeding you have can be a side effect of the implant... so it's better to have a patient watch with needful symptomatic treatment (without taking any more hormones)... as it may add to the hormonal imbalance you already have.
It is also needful to exclude any other cause for the bleeding by consulting a gynecologist. In case there are no normal menses... investigations to find the cause & specific treatment is indicated.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
