What Causes Prolonged Vaginal Bleeding While On Ashlyna?

Hi. I have spoken to my doctor regarding my concerns but I m seeking a second opinion. Back in April, I had surgery that resulted in getting a blood clot in my leg. I am currently taking Xarelto 20mg daily as a preventive for 6 months. This has caused my period to be heavier than I had experienced in the past. We are taking a trip that involves long hours on a plane in December so my doctor recommends that I continue the Xarelto until we return which I m fine with. However, 3 weeks ago when I started my period, I asked my doctor to allow me to take the 3 month birth control to help lighten my period. As of tomorrow, I will have been bleeding for 3 weeks straight. It is not heavy but has been continuous. The birth control is Ashlyna. My doctor said it could take some time to adjust but is 3 weeks of continuous bleeding more normal than not when combined with a blood thinner?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As you stated, 3 weeks would be considered a long period of time to take a contraceptive and not have it affect bleeding.

You may need to consider seeing your doctor about using another medication. He or she may want to consider Norethisterone to see if this helps to stop the bleeding.

I hope this helps.
