What Causes Prolonged Vaginal Bleeding While On Nexplanon?
Hi, i have been on nexplanon since June of 2017. My periods have been very irregular. Usually i wouldn t go more than a week and a half without bleeding. My period usually last 2 or 3 weeks. Now i have been on my period for over a month now. Its not very heavy but its more than just spotting. I also think my skin maybe starting to get irritated from wearing pads all the time. My work schedule is the same hours of most clinics in my area so by the time im off work they are all closed. Should this be a serious concern or is it normal for the bleeding to last this long?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Nexplanon is a contraceptive implant which has inbuilt Etonogestrel (progesterone derivative). It prevents ovulation & causes hormonal imbalance which results in irregular periods, heavy periods or absent periods. The profuse bleeding pattern mostly is reduced after 3-6 months of insertion. In case it does not/bleeding makes you weak then you should consult your gynecologist for management by medicines/removal of implant & replacement by other contraceptive.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale
