What Causes Protein In Urine?

I am diabetic. My 22 year old daughter just had a urine test and is showing protein in her urine and has to have further testing. I was just wondering if there are any greater possibilities of problems for her other than diabetes, which makes the most sense. I was diagnosed when I was 21. It is very prominent in my family. I guess I am hoping that is the worst case scenario for her.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear
Understand your concern
Following are the cause of protein in urine:
Diabetic nephrosclerosis , hypertensive neprhrosclerosis: in which glomerulo=us basement membrane will damage and increase its permeability lead to protein in to the urine.
Other causes are:
Overflow proteinuria in which increased protein in serum and then appear into the urine like multiple myleoma, high grade fever,
Nephrotic syndrome, amyloidosis, excessive stress and strenous exercise etc.
As you have strong history of diabetes in the family, it may be early sign of diabetes.
I advice you to consult the MD physician or nephrologist to confirm the diagnosis.
Get the following test done: blood sugar, USG, Hb1Ac, urinary microprotein test, UACR (Urine albumin creatinine ratio), lipid profile, blood pressor check up, serum protein, uric acid.
Management depends on the cause of problem.
Do regular exercise, avoid excessive sweets, take small frequent meal, doctor may provide losartan for proteinuria.
Hope this may help you
Best regards
Dr. Sagar
