What Causes Psychotic Reaction To Anaesthesia Post Lobectomy Surgery?

Dr. About 10 weeks ago I had a complicated lower lobe lobectomy It. Was supposed to be robotic surg. (Two small incisions), however surgeon had to cut and open to find the tumor. I had more anesthia and more trama than I expected. Luckily I was in a large well known teaching hospital. Apparently after surg. I developed what my daughter referred to as post surg. Phychotic anesthia. She was told this by the thoracic surgeon. I DO NOT REMEMBER the first six days after the surg.??? And it has taken me much longer to bounce back! WHAT IS THIS??

Hi,

I suspect that you didn't have a psychotic reaction but what doctors call "delirium". Delirium is a state of confusion after stress to the body. In older people, it can occur with environmental changes as well. Delirium can involve agitation or increased sleepiness, poor thinking and memory, confusion and anxiety. The ICU can also be a place of delirium as there is "ICU delirium".

The combination of major surgery, medications used, and recovery all contributed to your delirium. Delirium, by definition, is not long-lasting and improves once the body heals and the mind gets accustomed to the surroundings again. It is similar to some forms of dementia, which is permanent.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
