What Causes Pus Cells In Urine While Suffering From Diabetes?

Hi My father is having around 150 pus cells in urine right now with no other symptoms right now. He is diabetic. He had prostate abscess in oct 2015 which was drained rectally. Then he had TURP done in Dec 2015. After that he developed recto urethral fistula in Dec 2015 and colostomy done in December. His fistula got healed without any surgery in June 2016 and colostomy closed in June. Then he had mild hydronephrosis in left ureter in June. From Oct 2015 to June 2016 he had fever every month. Right now he is fine except diabetes is not in full control and pus cells in urine. Please advise the future treatment plan. Thanks

Hi
Thanks for posting your query on HCM
Pus in urine (pyuria) may be an indication that a serious condition is going on with the urinary tract. When very low like 5 to 8 php, it may be normal. But a value of 150 warrants investigation.A past history of diabetes, prostate abscess, TURP, rectourethral fistula and hydroneohrosis and may be his age are enough risk factors for serious urinary problems that can manifest through pus in urine. Some common causes include:
-UTI which is the most likely cause in his case
-Other causes may include: STIs, viral infections, anaerobic bacteria infection, fungal infection, kidney stones, just to name a few.
What ever the cause of pus in urine, i will advise you see a Doctor for a urinalysis so as to know the exact cause and treat. He may need a course of antibiotics but this will be decided by the Doctor. In the meantime, the following home measures may help him:
-Drink enough water/fluids
-Increase vitamin C intake
-Cranberry juice
-Cucumbar juice
Just to name a few
However, the best and definitive management will be after the results of Urinalysis and if need be other tests.
Hope my answer will help you
Best regards
