What Causes Pus Discharge And Swelling After Toe Nail Removal?

I had my toenail completely removed by a pediatrist on February 25th. I have had an X-ray, puss culture, blood work, and an mri done on my toe. It is still actively pussing. I have also been on 3 different antibiotics since then also. My toe is swollen and still draining. I have been placed in a boot also to remove some of the pressure in my toe. The pediatrist said that I should keep it moist so it can drain out. But more and more keeps coming. I also soak it three times a day. I don't know what more I can do or what I should do. Please help. My toe hurts, I can't wear socks or shoes with toes. Sometimes I have pain all the way into my hip from it. Please help. Thank you for your time. Erin

Hi,

As per your complain it seems that you have an infection in your toe leading to pus drainage and it seems that the infection is not resolving rather it is spreading leading to continuous discharge. It has to be taken care of immediately and you should consult a General Surgeon and get evaluated.

You can be advised incision and drainage of the area to completely remove pus followed by antiseptic dressings that has to be changed every alternate day to maintain aseptic environment and ease in reducing infection. You can be given injectable antibiotics along with oral to reduce infection faster.

Anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen can also be given to reduce pain and swelling. You should also not keep the area excessively moist as it will increase infection. Avoid wearing shoes and socks as it will put pressure as well as increase pain and infection. Avoid hitting the toe and always wear foot wears to prevent trauma.

Hope this information helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
