What Causes Racing Heart Post A Visit To An Elevated Place?

I am a 67 year old white female in excellent health. I just returned from a fly fishing trip to Montana; the lodge and the river were at 6300 (plus) elevation. While there I found myself a bit short of breath when walking quickly and especially if I was carrying luggage, etc. I have been home 48 hours (elev at 354 ) and I feel like my heart is racing. Could this symptom be lingering from the high elevation? I have no other symptoms. Thank you! Karen McBee (former R. N. and married to a general thoracic surgeon for 45 years...he is deceased).

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It is quite common after physical exertion. You can opt for an echo test to check the pumping action of the heart. Low cardiac out out can lead to similar symptoms. An ECG is also required to rule out cardiac arrhythmia even though it is unlikely.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
