What Causes Radiating Pain From Hip To Calf Upon Walking?

Over the past few days, it has become extremely painful for me to walk short distances. I have a pain in my right leg (right buttock) and it shoots all the down my leg. I have to stop about every 10 yds to rest because it is so painful. I m in good heath otherwise. I swim 2miles 4 days a week and walk regularly on an indoor track. I m 59, 170lbs and in excellent health.
