For the past few years I have been experiencing random facial swelling. Typically it s around my lips; it starts on one side and migrates around to the other. Usually it occurs at night and I wake up with it. It can be very painful, especially when the swelling gets really bad. I have tried for years to figure out what s going on, with no luck. The symptoms typically last about 24 hours, and then disappear. The last time it occurred a few days ago, the right side of my tongue swelled so badly that I could barely breathe. I ve tried Benadryl and don t know whether that helps or not (it doesn t seem to really do much but I take it anyway). I was diagnosed with Graves disease and had a partial thyroidectomy three years ago. After my surgery I didn t have any episodes of swelling for over year and thought I had finally figured out what had been causing the issue. Unfortunately, it s back. It s becoming increasingly problematic because I never know when it s going to occur, and I can t go out in public because I look like a hideous freak when I m having the symptoms. It also seems to be happening with increasing regularity. Two episodes just this week. It happens at home, it happens when I m traveling in different cities and states and happens regardless of my diet. I m at a loss. Any thoughts?
