What Causes Rapid Heart Rate After The Dye Injection Before A CT Scan?

I had an abdominal CT scan a few years ago. I was very nervous when the nurse brought me my prep to drink and prepared me for how I would feel during the dye injection. I was completely blind sided. I also suffer panic attacks...frequently in medical situation that are new or unpleasant. So when they injected the dye I was extremely apprehensive. .Afraid of allergic reaction and so on. My heart began racing,I was terrified and the tech told me I was fine and to remain still. afterward I quickly got up from the table and went in the room next door to calm down and reduce my heart rate. I don t have a heart condition but I have IBD and was diagnosed at 7 years of age. I am now 45...I need to have another CT scan and am still wondering if the contrast caused or can cause the rapid heart rate? Or more likely was it a panic attack. I m wondering if this is common or dangerous. Or do I just tell myself its going to be alright and come prepared with something prescribed by my Dr. to relax.

Hi thanks for posting your query on health care magic.
As per your clinical history ,the increased rate in your case is mostly related to apprehension prior to procedure.Modern day contrast substances are not associated with any adverse clinical outcomes.
Hence panic attack is the most likely cause in your case ,supported by past history of irritable bowel syndrome at age 7. I prescribe tab clonazepam to you before undergoing your next contrast study.
So stay relaxed and be assured.this condition is absolutely not dangerous.
Concern your family doctor in case of further assistance.
Thank you,
Take care,
