General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Rapid heart rate commonly occurs due to Tachycardia triggered by hypertension. Atrial fibrillation causing factors are CAD, coronary artery disease, tumors, infections & valvular heart diseases.

Your dad should continue to take the medicines prescribed by the treating doctor. He should stay away from taking alcohol, smoking or addictions if any.

He should get physically examined by a cardiologist, investigated(blood tests, ECG, Echo, Lipid profile, stress test, etc) diagnosed & treated for hypertension, thyroid issues, CAD, valvular diseases. Cut on salt intake & help him stay well hydrated to maintain the electrolyte balance of the body system.

His treatment will depend upon the pathology detected. His treating doctor may give him anti arrhythmic drugs, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, diltiazem. propranolol, etc.

He may consider cardioversion, ICD implant, Radiofrequency catheter ablation. Surgery of blood thinners.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
