Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi I am 18 years old and when I try to go to sleep or when I lay down my heart starts beating really fast and I can feel my heart thumping when I touch my chest. Also I have a hard time breathing because my nose feels like its stuffed but its not and my ear feel like it's clogged but it's not. What do you think is causing this?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
After going through your medical query I understand your concern & I would like to tell you that considering your age palpitations during sleeping hours can be because of heavy or spicy meal in the night which can cause strong gastric refluxes which triggers heart rate. But to exclude any heart abnormality is also required. Kindly get an ECG and Echocardiography done to exclude structural heart disease and consult a Physician for proper physical evaluation.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
1. Anxiety neurosis/panic attacks.
2. Obstructive sleep apnea;several studies have shown that people with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are at a much greater risk of having high blood pressure. OSA causes your oxygen level to drop. Your heart beats faster due to the lack of oxygen.
3. Drugs like caffeine/alcohol/smoking.
4. Hyperthyroidism/hypertension.
5. pheochromocytoma etc.
Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is. Avoid spicy food and alcohol avoid smoking and caffeine drinks. Do regular exercise and yoga.
If symptoms not improved please consult your physician/cardiologist they will examine and treat you accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
