What Causes Rapid Increase In PSA Level With Negative Result For Prostate Cancer?

My psa level keep rising. It went from 3.84 in May 2014 to 4.21 in November 2014. I had a biopsy of my prostate in January 2015 which was negative for cancer. I have another psa test June 2015 and now it is 7.52. Is there anything else other than cancer that would cause such a rapid increase in the psa level?

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM,
The normal level of PSA is below 4 ng/mL.
Levels above 4 ng/mL is seen in prostatitis (inflammation of prostate), prostatic instrumentation, prostatic infarction and lastly prostatic cancer.
An increasing PSA level needs to be investigated.
As you have mentioned that you underwent a biopsy.
The procedure of biopsy taking can lead to increase in PSA levels and thus PSA level needs to be repeated after a period of 4 weeks.
In addition, an urine examination and semen examination needs to be done to look for presence of pus cells and thus infection.
Pus cells in semen and urine can be present in case of prostatitis.
Besides deep lower abdominal pain is also experienced in prostatitis.
If there is no pain, no pus cells in urine or semen, then cancer of prostate is a strong possibility.
I suggest you to consult your urologist for clinical assessment, relevant investigations and thus management.

Thanks and take care
