What Causes Rapid Rise In The Heart Rate?

I am having an accelerated heart rate. I am getting readings with my BP machine of around 100. I suspect , from past experience, the condition has been caused by eating some chocolate cake with---I now suspect--- high fructose corn syrup in it, as well as taking Claritan because of a pollen allergy. I have stopped the chocdolate cake and Claritan, and am continuing with 50 mg metropolol twice a day, prescribed by my cardiologist, on the assumption it will, as in the past---when I had such episodes--- bring the heart rate down. I will check with my cardiologist tomorrow.,

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

There can be several causes for a rapid rise in heart rate, including physical exertion, stress, anxiety, fever, medication side effects, and underlying medical conditions such as hyperthyroidism or heart disease. In your case, the high fructose corn syrup in the chocolate cake and/or the Claritin medication may have contributed to your accelerated heart rate.

Metoprolol is a beta-blocker medication that can help slow down the heart rate and reduce blood pressure. It is often prescribed for conditions such as hypertension, angina, and certain types of arrhythmias. If you are experiencing persistent symptoms or have concerns about your heart rate, it is important to consult with your cardiologist for further evaluation and management. They may recommend additional tests or adjustments to your medication regimen.
