What Causes Rapid Weight Gain Post Menopause In Women With Cardiovascular Syndrome?

I Have had some of the symptoms of being pregnant but I m not... So much so that I did a home pregnancy test & it was negative. (I m already post menopausal- when I turned about 45 & I m now 58.) I m gaining weight but only in front, my stomach. (I look pregnant.... ) I m not gaining in the usual areas; face, neck, back or sides only out front. One day I fit my jeans & the next week I couldn t do them up. The gain is that fast. (I look about 5 - 6 months pregnant & that s roughly how long ago it all started.) I know this is rather strange & hesitate to write.... I do have cardiovascular syndrome x meaning I have lots of angina & heart pain but my arteries are clear. I m using nitro spray only. I also have had a blockage in my eye resulting in permanent blind spots & the specialist caught a detaching retina just before it reached a major eye artery. (Did the laser treatment) otherwise I am very healthy. Thank you, JS - Frustrated

Hello,

You have not given any information about your obstetrical history. Women who deliver babies by C-section often have a tendency to gain belly fat. Stress also causes slender woman to gain abdominal fat due to increased level of cortisol stress hormone.

Since you are diagnosed to have cardiovascular syndrome, you should maintain a healthy BMI at all cost. Weight gain may indicate worsening of your cardiac symptoms.

Since you are post menopausal you are suggested to cut on addictions if any, take food rich in calcium & minerals or multivitamins. Take vitamin E rich food or supplements.

Cut on carbs, refined flour, spicy-oily food, full fat dairy, red meat, etc. Take food cooked in olive oil.

Get follow up check ups done with blood & imaging tests at least once in three months, this is to stay on the safer side. Do regular exercises, walking & avoid sedentary life. Stay away from stress.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K.
