Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What can cause a 10 lb weight loss in less than 2 weeks? My husband has been very sick for about a year. He spent 2 1/2 months in the hospital for a severe case of colitis. He lost 40 lbs. and was very weak. He had a feeding tube for about 6 weeks. He started gaining weight and feeling a lot better. University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics started him on Entyvio infusions. He received 3 of those treatments and ended up with C. Diff and back in the hospital for 2 weeks. Our family doctor and the Iowa Doctor agreed he should quit the treatments. That has been 3-4 months ago. He is eating fairly well w/o dairy. Gaining about 10-15 lbs. Recently losing a pound or 2 in a 1 month stretch. But within 12 days he lost 10 lbs and eating the same. We are not sure what to do. He has an appointment with our family doctor this Friday and an appointment with Iowa City on March 1st. He is not having any symptoms of colitis.
The rapid weight loss in a person with history of colitis and C.Diff infection is most likely related to malabsorption issues at intestine level. Though he is consuming precise diet, the necessary nutrients are not being absorbed for the systemic reach and hence the deficiency of protein, iron, vitamins, minerals and others lead to rapid weight loss. In my clinic, after thorough physical and series of lab tests with or without radiology work up, I suggest plan of nutritional reestablishment and further guidelines of weight control.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
