What Causes Rash On Hand Responding To Hydrocortisone Cream?

How common is a hand rash with mono. My son is a college freshman. He developed a hand rash which has since decreased with hydrocortisone cream. A friend of his has a similar rash and went to the university clinic. She tested positive for mono and they said the rash is a potential symptom. She is otherwise is asymptomatic as is he. Sorry I didn t realize this was a pay site. I will discuss with a friend of mine tomorrow

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

A rash on the hand in response to hydrocortisone cream can be caused by an allergic reaction to the cream. This is more likely if the rash appeared shortly after applying the cream and if the rash is red, itchy, and spreading beyond the area where the cream was applied.

Regarding the second part of your question, a hand rash is not a common symptom of mono (infectious mononucleosis). However, some people with mono may develop a rash as a result of an allergic reaction to the antibiotics that are sometimes prescribed to treat secondary infections. It's also possible that the rash is unrelated to mono and is simply a coincidence.

Your son and his friend need to continue to monitor their symptoms and follow any recommendations from their healthcare providers. If their symptoms worsen or new symptoms develop, they should seek medical attention promptly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
