What Causes Rashes All Over Body While Using Amoxicillin For Mononucleosis?

My son has been diagnosed with mono. He is 17. A week prior he was seen in the urgent care for a sore throat and was given amoxicillin. Now he has a rash that is covering 85% of his body. I have read about this being a symptom of using amox with mono, but it is really prevalent. Do I need to be concerned or will it simply pass?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Its exact cause is not known but appears to be an allergic reaction. Amoycillin is known to cause generalized maculopapular rash if prescribed for the treatment of infectious mononucleosis however its exact cause is not known. There is nothing to worry as this rash is not contagious and usually begins to fade after 3 days but may take up to 6 days to disappear.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
