What Causes Rashes And Skin Peeling On Body After Hydroxychloroquine Withdrawal?

I quit taking hydrocholoquine about 2 weeks after starting as I got a severe rash all over my body that turned purple. Every inch of my skin has been peeling off...it s now coming off of the bottom of my feet and today the red rash has returned on my torso and back and legs. I am afraid it could be SJS and would like to know what you think?

1. hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial drug which is also given to reduce inflammation in arthritis and lupus.

2. There are a few cases of Stevens–Johnson syndrome [SJS] associated with the drug, reported by the pharmaceutical company Sanofi‐Synthelab (UK), but none has been definitively linked to hydroxychloroquine, so will require further work up with your Rheumatologist for Viral Serology, till then treat at home with emollients and topical steroids.

3. The most serious side effect of hydroxychloroquine is eye toxicity [blurring of vision] with chronic use [5 years] so if taking for short term treatment then watch out for: nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, heart problems, reduced appetite, headache, fulminant hepatic failure, ototoxicity.
