What Causes Rashes On The Arms And Legs After Taking Amoxicillin?

i was prescribed amoxicillin (sp.) because of a respitory infection...they didn't know if it was a virus or a bacterial infection but since I was flying to Hawaii, they thought it best to take the amoxicillin. On the last day of taking the medication, I woke up with a rash on my arms, back, legs and face. I then started taking benedryl, thinking I was having an allergic reaction. It is now 3 days later, the rash is fading but now my lips are numb....so, is this another reaction to the amoxicillin or to the benedryl??? I am allergic to sulfa drugs. I would appreciate your opinion. Thank you. Cheryll Schramm

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that you had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic Amoxicillin given to you leading to itchy rashes and urticaria or itching..

It is one of the common presentation of allergy to antibiotic that leads to rashes and itching..
Numb feeling of lips can be due to the reaction only..

Many a times when the reaction is severe it cannot resolve immediately after taking anti allergics and needs to take anti-allergics for 3-4 days for reaction to subside..

You should also immediately stop taking the antibiotics and consult your treating physician or an Emergency room and get evaluated and he can give you injectable steroid to relieve the symptoms faster..
Along with it oral anti allergics will be continued..
You can also be advised to calamine or caladryl lotion over the rashes..
Doing cool compresses and applying Calamine lotion can also help..
