What Causes Rashes On The Back After Taking Warfarin Post Knee Replacement?

Started warfarin two weeks ago after a knee replacement. My back in the hospital became very itchy. Once home my back broke out with pus filled eruptions. Told by Doctor via pictures it was contact dermatitis from detergent used in hospital. Itch got worse went to Urgent Care told it was an allergic reaction to oxyicodone. Given a cortisone cream. Can this rash be from Warfarin have since stopped pain meds

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

All medications have potential side effects. Warfarin can cause an allergic rash in some persons but this is an effect that can occur with any medication so it would be difficult to say that it is related to this only.

If the rash resolves with the treatment which should include the topical steroid cream, oral antihistamine and possibly a topical or oral antibiotic (to help with the pus filled areas), and you are still on the warfarin then it is not likely related.

If it persists despite treatment and you are only warfarin then it may be the cause and you may need another anticoagulant.

I hope this helps
