What Causes Raw Dryness In Throat, Cough And Frequent Choking?

Hi, I ve been on Nexium for 7 years for GERD of the stricture type. I have had 2 bouts of a very nasty flu this winter and my voice has become consistently very husky and my throat feels really dry and raw making me cough and choke quite often even waking me up from sleeping. My glands appear swollen in the mornings sometimes too but not for long. Any suggestion please to help resolve this problem?

Hi,

The raw dryness in your throat, cough, and frequent choking could be caused by a few different factors, including the flu, acid reflux, or a side effect of the Nexium medication you are taking.

The flu can cause inflammation and irritation in the throat, which can lead to dryness, coughing, and choking. Your immune system may be weakened due to the flu, making you more susceptible to other infections or illnesses.

Acid reflux occurs when the contents of the stomach flow back up into the esophagus, causing irritation and inflammation in the throat. Nexium is a medication used to treat acid reflux, but it is possible that your symptoms are not being fully controlled with this medication. It may be helpful to talk to your doctor about adjusting your dosage or trying a different medication.

It is also possible that the dryness and irritation in your throat are a side effect of the Nexium medication. Dry mouth and throat are common side effects of proton pump inhibitors like Nexium. Drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated may help to alleviate these symptoms.

Overall, it is recommended that you speak with your doctor about your symptoms to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment plan. In the meantime, you can try staying hydrated, avoiding irritants like smoking or alcohol, and using a humidifier to help ease the dryness in your throat.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

You symptoms make me think of the following:
1) Allergic laryngitis
2) Obstructive upper airway disease
3) Allergic bronchitis
4) Tracheobronchitis

The following are few treatment options:
1) Any cough syrup that contains bronchodilators like salbutamol, salmeterol, formeterol etc.
2) Aerocort or Asthallin inhaler 2 puffs at a time twice daily.
3) Drink warm water and avoid cold water.
4) Warm salt water gargles daily twice
5) Continue Nexium.

If your symptoms don't subside, please do contact an ENT surgeon for further evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
