What Causes Really Bad Inner Ear Pain And Lump Behind Ear?

I am having terrible shooting pain in my right ear, seems as though its radiating from the knot (?) behind my ear. I have had this over the years and has just gone away in a day or two. This time is HORRIBLY painful and doesn t seem to be getting any better, actually worse. It shoots in my ear and eases after 3-4 seconds but is terrible when it happens 4/5 per minute.

Hello,

You are suffering from severe pain in the inner ear & have also developed a lump behind the ear. You should not enter into swimming pools or any water bodies for a couple of months. Be very careful when you bath, do not let water get inside your ears. Pain in the ear is commonly due to presence of wax, fluid in the ear(AOM/CSOM), acute infection, etc. Lump behind the ear may be indicative of bacterial infection affecting the mastoid bone & forming a lump.

You are suggested to get clinically examined by an ENT, get the required tests and investigations done. Get treated at the earliest. In the meantime, you can take Combiflam or Naproxen, one stat when pain for relief. Bacterial infection will be treated with a course of antibiotics. If wax is detected, it will be removed by a clinical procedure in the OPD. Get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Pathologist and Microbiologist Dr. Shailja Puri's  Response
Hello,

Shooting pain behind ear can be due to some neurological pathology like neuralgia. I suggest you to consult a primary healthcare provider for clinical assessment. As you have mentioned that there is a lump behind the ear, it needs to be determined whether that lump is associated with radiating pain or not.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shailja Puri, Pathologist and Microbiologist
